What is a Netbook?

March 11, 2009

acer

Well, for lack of a better description, it is a mini laptop computer.  I saw one the other day at Costco.  It was an Acer Aspire selling for $399!  The first thing that popped into my mind was how cheap this was (Thank you China) and I began to wonder whether or nor this product could be useful in a classroom setting.  I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be able to teach a Project Based Learning type of class where every student has a laptop.

At $399, this little netbook did pretty much everything a high school student would need it to do.  Maybe now they can all afford to get one!

A lot of the technology that has allowed this to happen has come from the One Laptop Per Child Program, which is looking to outfit millions of students in the Third World with a wireless laptop for $100 each.

    Check it out: http://laptop.org/en/

It’s an amazing cause; and cool to think that a philanthropic project such as this has also caused the depression of laptop prices at the same time!
